Director of Marine Life Conservation

Shelby Loos, DVM, is the Marinelife Conservation Director with responsibility for all aspects of the Sea Turtle Program, including rehabilitation operations, external partnerships, clinical research, and administration. She also leads all marinelife conservation efforts for The Coastal Stewards, which now includes collaborations with FWC for manatee rescue and conservation along with NOAA for cetacean emergency response.

Dr. Loos is a 2017 graduate of the University of Florida with a Certificate in Marine Animal Medicine during which time she completed veterinary externships with The Georgia Sea Turtle Center, SeaWorld Orlando, Aloha Pet and Bird Hospital, and Dolphins Plus. Following veterinary school, Dr. Loos completed an intensive rotating veterinary internship through BluePearl Veterinary Partners at which time she also participated in veterinary rotations with Clearwater Marine Aquarium and SeaWorld Orlando.

She then went on to complete a Marine Animal Medicine Veterinary Fellowship where her training further focused on the medical care of dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, along with terrestrial zoo animals. After completing her post-veterinary training, Dr. Loos has worked full-time and/or provided veterinary services for various Florida-based marine animal facilities including Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder, Island Dolphin Care, Theater of the Sea, Dolphin Research Center, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, and the Miami Seaquarium where she focused on the critical care treatment of sea turtles and manatees.

Prior to veterinary school, Dr. Loos participated in wild dolphin photo-ID research, mass stranding and marine mammal stranding response with subsequent rehabilitation efforts, along with sea turtle rescue response, giving her over 14 years of experience in marine animal conservation.
