The Coastal Stewards

Dedicated to the Protection and Study of
Marine Life and the Coastal Ecosystems

About The Coastal Stewards

The Coastal Stewards is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) conservation organization formerly known as the Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards. The nonprofit was established in 1981 as The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center of South Palm Beach.

We are dedicated to the protection and study of marine life through our Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center and education programs. We have also recently expanded our conservation focus to include sea turtles, manatees, and dolphins.

We invite you to join us on our journey to support the research and conservation of our marine and coastal environment, and perhaps most importantly, inspire the next generation to take ownership and make it a better future for us all.

Our Programs

The Coastal Stewards’ Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Release Program is led by veterinarian Dr. Shelby Loos, Director of Marine Life Conservation, and her skilled team.

The GLCS Youth Leadership Council was formed in 2023 to help conservation efforts by raising awareness about environmental problems and encouraging the community to help make a positive impact on the Earth.

Scientific Research

Scientific research and conservation are crucial for protecting marine life and coastal ecosystems. Using modern technology, marine scientists and researchers are able to monitor biodiversity, water quality, and human impacts to develop strategies against on-going threats like pollution, overfishing, and climate change. These efforts ensure the sustainability and resilience of these environments for future generations to enjoy, learn about, and protect. Our Research investigations are led by our Science and Education Officer, Dr. Harrison Albert.

Community Education Programs

Community education programs for coastal conservation are essential for preserving marine ecosystems. The Coastal Stewards engage local volunteers, schools, and other like minded organizations in beach cleanups and wildlife monitoring. Educational workshops and outreach campaigns raise awareness about sustainable practices and pollution impact, fostering collective responsibility for long-term coastal health and a way for everyone to make a difference in hands-on in conservation.
